With the recently adopted Ghanaian Sustainable Banking Principles, the banking sector is poised commence implementation of the localized principles on best practices on E&S risk management. A key component of the success of the initiative is the availability of local (Ghana-based) consultants/consulting firms that can support the banks in developing and implementing E&S management systems (ESMS).
The ESRM program has designed and implemented a training of local consultants who can support financial sectors in the implementation of the sustainable banking principles.
The local consultants were identified through an open and competitive process, and between February 2019 - February 2020 participated in a series of intensive modules on E&S risk management. The training content was complimented by organized site visits, discussion sessions, and working sessions/showcase fairs with the financial sector.
On February 25th 2020, at a high level breakfast briefing for Chief Risk Officers of local banks, seventeen (17) local consultants were presented with certificates of successful completion. The event also presented the opportunity for high level discussions on sustainable banking. A panel discussion on "The Future of Banking - ESG in the Ghanaian market place" highlighted the opportunities and benefits of integrating ESG and exploring sustainable finance for the local financial sector. The discussion panelists included - Ms. Seynabou Ba (Founder, ESG Africa), Kofi Abotshi (Managing Partner, Axis Legal, Fellow of IoD), Mr. Thomas Broni (Vice Chair, Ghana Sustainable Banking Committee and Head of Compliance, Prudential Bank), and Mr. Ebenezer Wangara (CEO, Wangara Green Ventures)
